2010

In Summer 2010, the first issue of the international Journal on Screendance launched. This project is produced by the Screendance Network.
In April 2010, Kyra was one of 10 invited writers contributing to What If... an amazing festival curated by Lucy Cash, Becky Edmunds, Claudia Kappenberg, Chirstinn Whyte and Gill Clarke, held at Siobhan Davies Studios, London. Writing from this event will be published in a special edition of Dance Theatre Journal later in 2010.
2009
In May 2009, the AHRC Network for Discourse
and Publication in Screendance was launched: an
international network, advancing an interdisciplinary theoretical and
practice-based discourse on the artform.
Kyra is a
participant in and Administrator for the Network. This work furthers
her commitment to creative collaboration and active engagement
with the contexts in which screendance is made, presented and thought
about.
Along with several other commitments, including knuckling down with her PhD research and hanging out with her daughter, born in 2008, this work has also meant that The Light Fantastic events have been on the back burner. For now... watch this space.

On Wednesday 24th October 2007 Afrika Eye & The Light Fantastic present MOVEMENT (R)EVOLUTION AFRICA :: Screening starts 8pm :: Admission £5 :: At the Cube Microplex, Dove St South [off King Square] Bristol BS2 8NQ
Dominant media images of Africa project a vast, undifferentiated land steeped in tradition and ensnared in a web of poverty, HIV/AIDS, and political turmoil. By focusing on the stories of fiercely creative African individuals - nine choreographers from Senegal to South Africa - Movement (R)evolution Africa presents fresh images of Africa and brings to life the continent’s contemporary identity. This film has been amazing audiences at festivals around the world since its release earlier this year - not to be missed. Plus specially selected shorts from artists who use movement and moving image to present alternative and original narratives of migration, identity and belonging, including work by Kervon Grant; David McCormick & Benedict Johnson; Denise Rowe; and Lisa May Thomas.
This event is part of Afrika Eye festival, taking place across Bristol this week.

The Light Fantastic presents AUGUSTO CORRIERI :: Friday 16th February 2007 :: 7.30pm :: £5/ £4 concs :: Cube Microplex Dove St South [off King Square] Bristol UK
Tonight sees the welcome return to the Microplex of Augusto Corrieri, presenting his acclaimed live solo performance 'Quartet (for Anna Akhmatova)', with original music score by Maw. Based on an accident that took place at La Scala opera house in Italy in 1913, Quartet is a playful exploration of the idea that theatre is not what takes place on the stage, but rather what happens in the minds of the spectators
To complement this performance, TLF presents an especially curated programme of screen work, collected around the theme: what makes an action a performance? What makes a space a stage? What makes a gesture a dance? Including work by Becky Edmunds (Brighton), Tom Marshman & Anna Lucas (Bristol), Polly Hudson (West Midlands) and others...
TLF is about bringing together artists and audiences in an informal setting for discussing, inspiring, dreaming & scheming - so get here from 7.30pm to socialise & sample the delights of the Cube's unique bar - show starts 8.15pm

2005/2006
In the summer of 2005, The Light Fanastic issued an open invite to artists working with movement and moving image in Bristol and the surrounding area to present their work.
The first event took place in September 2005, and generated so much interest, discussion and excitement that a year-long programme grew, with TLF managing monthly events under the banner "The rough, the polished, the thoughtful, the frivolous, the raw and the cooked".
Each month a different group of artists collaborated, supported by TLF, to fill the space with ideas and interactions, from works-in-progress to curated programmes of works that inspire us. Over 100 artists took part, many people sought out dance - live and on screen - for the first time, and several new creative collaborations began.
A few highlights from this programme...
February 2006: Street Dance on Screen
Screening of David La Chappelle's feature-length documentary about krumping in LA, Rize. Plus video work from legendary Bristol breakdance crew, Physical Jerks, and Bristol-based filmmaker Mena Fombo's tale of star-crossed lovers: Amar and Saleema: Hip Hop vs Bhangra, shot on location in and around the city and featuring a host of Bristol street dancers
April 2006: Tango Milonga
An evening in collaboration with Eduardo Bozzo of Tango Alchemy
Including a Tango lesson for beginners, live Tango performance, excerpts from classic Tango films and a seriously lively open floor session
May 2006: Sound & Dance on Screen
An evening dedicated to exploring the relationship between sound and screen-based movement, featuring screen dance works, excerpts from features, music promos... and live performance from Orchestra Cube re-scoring specially selected short films
