The Light Fantastic moves into the New Year in fine style with the premiere and launch party for Still Waters Run Deep, a brand new film from Wilkie Branson and collaborators, of celebrated Bristol b-boys, the Physical Jerks. Still Waters... combines original text and graphic art alongside Wilkie's signature movement style to form a creative reflection on the daily struggle to communicate: inspiring, engaging and accomplished work. Dominant media images of Africa project a vast, undifferentiated land steeped in tradition and ensnared in a web of poverty, HIV/AIDS, and political turmoil. By focusing on the stories of fiercely creative African individuals - nine choreographers from Senegal to South Africa - Movement (R)evolution Africa presents fresh images of Africa and brings to life the continent’s contemporary identity. This film has been amazing audiences at festivals around the world since its release earlier this year - not to be missed. Plus specially selected shorts from artists who use movement and moving image to present alternative and original narratives of migration, identity and belonging, including work by Kervon Grant; David McCormick & Benedict Johnson; Denise Rowe; and Lisa May Thomas.
This event is part of Afrika Eye festival, taking place across Bristol this week.

The Light Fantastic is pleased to be participating in this year's Venn Festival, taking place 31st May to 3rd June 2007, Bristol, UK. Twentieth Century Cube and The Light Fantastic present a very special soiree inspired by classic dance moments in feature films, topped off with a 35mm screening of Top Hat. This is one of Fred Astaire & Ginger Rogers' most memorable films, superbly accompanied by Irving Berlin's score.
So get your dancing shoes on. Compered by self-styled outlaws of the dance floors Barry and Yvonne, Couple #69 (Stickleback Plasticus), the evening also features the Physical Jerks live on stage in Gangsters, a jaw-dropping noir-tinged breakdance show referencing everything from ballet to Thriller, plus shorts including Freya Billington's new film, Hustle, and DJs and impromptu dancing in the bar.
Warm up drinks from 7.30pm, show starts promptly at 8pm. Discounts for those wearing top hats or feathers (Rogers earned her nickname Feathers whilst making Top Hat, after an outfit that got right up Astaire's nose). Click here to see the full size poster for this event

Tonight sees the welcome return to the Microplex of Augusto Corrieri, presenting his acclaimed live solo performance 'Quartet (for Anna Akhmatova)', with original music score by Maw. Based on an accident that took place at La Scala opera house in Italy in 1913, Quartet is a playful exploration of the idea that theatre is not what takes place on the stage, but rather what happens in the minds of the spectators
To complement this performance, TLF presents an especially curated programme of screen work, collected around the theme: what makes an action a performance? What makes a space a stage? What makes a gesture a dance? Including work by Becky Edmunds (Brighton), Tom Marshman & Anna Lucas (Bristol), Polly Hudson (West Midlands) and others...
TLF is about bringing together artists and audiences in an informal setting for discussing, inspiring, dreaming & scheming - so get here from 7.30pm to socialise & sample the delights of the Cube's unique bar - show starts 8.15pm
